Marking Dignity Action Day
Eastfield House and St Cecilia's care home marked today's Dignity Action Day by pausing to reflect on the importance of providing people with the respect and dignity they deserve.
Both businesses are signed up to be Dignity Champions and to take up the Dignity Challenge.
All staff at both the day care centre and care home have been issued with Dignity in Care fold-out cards which spell out the 10 messages that we follow.
This challenge says care services should: have zero tolerance of abuse, support people with the same respect you would want for yourself or a member of your family, treat each person as an individual, enable people to maintain independence, choice and control and listen and support people to express their needs and wants.
Those services should also respect people’s right to privacy, ensure people feel able to complain, engage with family members and carers as care partners, assist people to maintain confidence and positive self-esteem and act to alleviate loneliness and isolation.

VIPs officially open Eastfield House
VIPs including the Mayor, television presenter Harry Gration and Scarborough MP Robert Goodwill were on hand to officially open Eastfield House today.
Eastfield House held an open day to show how the centre has been transformed into a modern venue for care.
The Mayor, Councillor John Blackburn, Harry Gration and Mr Goodwill were called upon to cut the ribbon to officially open the centre.
They were joined by Susan Crookes, whose father, Dr Eustace Evans, was the original GP when Eastfield House was opened as a doctor’s surgery in 1956.
Before they could perform the ceremony, Councillor Blackburn, Harry and Mr Goodwill joined in a chairobic exercise session – just one of the demonstrations which formed part of the open day.
Melanie Padgham, manager at Eastfield House, said: “The open day was a tremendous success with a real mix of people coming along to see what we have achieved here.
“We had our VIPs and people from local council, health and housing bodies, some of our regular clients and some people who had come along to see what day care at Eastfield House is all about.”
Councillor Blackburn said Eastfield House was “a wonderful facility” for Scarborough and Harry Gration praised the “very special atmosphere” that had been created for day care visitors.
Mr Goodwill said Eastfield House was “just the sort of facility we need”.
Business owner Mike Padgham thanked everyone for joining in and organising the open day.
“When we took over this former GPs surgery, it was our desire to create a modern but at the same time welcoming and homely centre where people could come and enjoy specialist, professional care, activities and companionship,” he said.
“We are very much dedicated to offering people choice, dignity and independence but over and above that we want Eastfield House to be a place where people come for fun, enjoyment, stimulation and relaxation.”
Visitors saw a range of exhibitions and demonstrations including Telecare, mobility equipment, opticians, home care, massage and aromatherapy, exercise, nutrition, cleaning products and stimulating games.
